RESILIENT INFRASTRUCTURE

This research cluster examines the issues associated with the provision and maintenance of the physical infrastructure of cities and regions principles of urban design: the communications, transportation, utility and power networks that underpin economic development and social well-being. In the aftermath of catastrophic events the restoration of these networks is a priority; while investment in new and improved networks is critical in securing urban and regional resilience to the adverse effects of long-term economic and environmental change. The foci of our research in this area are complementary with the Forum’s other research clusters: financial resilience, the socio-political dimensions of resilience, and ‘the resilience machine’. Current research includes: next generation infrastructure, issues surrounding aging infrastructure in the United States, and the role of higher education in workforce development in the fields of building design, and architecture.
